Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is a way some children learn to communicate by first memorizing and using whole phrases or “chunks” of language, rather than starting with individual words. Over time, they may break these phrases into smaller parts and combine them in new ways. Children who use this learning style can benefit from adults modeling meaningful, flexible language that matches what they are interested in and trying to communicate.

A Speech-Generating Device (SGD) is a tool that produces spoken words or messages when the child select pictures, symbols, letters, or words on the device. SGDs can provide children with a reliable way to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas, especially when speaking is difficult or not yet consistently understood. Using an SGD can support communication, reduce frustration, and promote greater independence.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor based speech disorder where a child knows what they want to say but has difficulty planning and coordinating the precise movements needed to produce sounds and words. As a result, their speech may be difficult to understand, and they may have trouble saying the same word the same way each time. Children with CAS often benefit from specialized speech therapy that provides frequent practice and helps them build more accurate and consistent speech movements.
